From 18th to 20th July the City of Rijeka, Croatia will host Republika – a world meeting of creative persons who are shaping the future of the modern world. It will gather some of the most creative and exciting minds of today and bring together some of the best creative ideas of the region. Among the hundreds of renowned speakers from the world and the region, you will find representatives from Google and Mozilla, as well as gurus of social networks, international stars of internet activism and social practices, leading IT entrepreneurs, and some of the world’s most famous bloggers.
Let’s mention some of them: Google security engineer Morgan Marquis-Boire; famous science fiction writer and one of the creators of cyberpunk Bruce Sterling; representative of the Mozilla Foundation and Creative Commons activist Michelle Thorne; independent researcher of computer security systems, hacker and a key member of the Tor project, Jacob Appelbaum; computer games developer Rami Ismail and Toch studio whose clients include Nike, MTV Europe and Joaquín Cortés etc.
As part of Republika, for the first time in one place, three prominent festivals that take place on three different continents will be presented – Share (Belgrade, Beirut), A MAZE (Berlin, Johannesburg) and Pause (Melbourne), reinforced by new regional projects – Start Art Expo and a project you will hear more about in the future: RockPaperStartups! Also, all relevant organizations, projects and talented individuals from the region will meet and jointly set up a platform for long-term networking and cooperation and the development of new innovative ideas and business in Rijeka.
Republika will take place at two unique locations, a protected monument owned by the City of Rijeka – Galeb and former factory Rikard Bencic, which will through Republika gain a brand new purpose. A historical ship and old industrial halls will be revived through the lectures, panels, workshops, film screenings, exhibitions, entertainment, and music programs which will take place there, gathering advanced thinkers from all over the world.
Republika is a strategic project of the City of Rijeka, which supports and represents the local creative industry, educates the public on the project for the revitalization of the former industrial block Rikard Bencic and raises their awareness of its immense potential to transform Rijeka from a post-industrial to a creative city. The project intends to put Rijeka on the map of Europe’s creative cities, in the light of Rijeka’s candidacy for the European Capital of Culture 2020, as well as the new European cultural policy which focuses on the development and promotion of creative industries.
Affordable ticket prices, attractive locations, new and alternative method of education for young creative people make Republika a unique meeting of activists and professionals from around the world and the region, but also the always curious cultural tourists.
Tickets for Republika will soon be on sale. For all the creative people who want to be part of Republika an open competition for scholarships, that will include lodging and tickets, will be opened. The number of scholarships will be limited, and more information about tickets and scholarships will be available soon at the festival’s website.
