If you have ever tried to install a WordPress plugin, you have probably asked yourself which plugins do you really need. Also, after you chose one, how can you tell it is the one for you? Those dilemmas should be solved through a new service, RankWP, which offers more information on existing plugins.
Algorithm tracks number of plugin’s users
RankWP provides information on the plugins, which is otherwise not available in WordPress plugin directory. That should help users in choosing the right plugin for their webpage or blog. As Boštjan Špetič, cofounder of Zemanta and author of Rang WP, states, you can find multiple plugins for virtually anything these days. However, when you install a plugin, it’s a commitment and risk. You grant it full access to your web site or blog, so you want to be careful. Also, there are thousands of plugins, which makes the choice even harder. That is why RankWP offers users to see how popular an individual plugin actually is.
For that reason the authors built an algorithm that estimates the actual number of active users of each plugin. Plugins also become more or less popular over time, so they track their popularity rank and show the change, which is very useful information. Authors also chose not to replicate information that is already available in the WordPress plugin directory, because they don’t want to copy the existing content. Instead, they track ranking, estimate user base and follow reviews of plugins around the web.
What do you think, will this kind of plugin ranking make the process of finding the right plugin easier?
