Croatian startup Bellabeat, that created the unique smartphone-connected device for baby’s heartbeat monitoring, just announced its new family members focused on (expectant) moms. They are called Shell, Leaf and Balance – the whole new set is making prenatal and neonatal care more personal and socially interactive. With their new family of products made from high-quality European wood, Bellabeat is bridging the gap between sterile medical devices and the natural journey of pregnancy and motherhood.
This startup wants to change the picture of pregnancy and birth, which is currently related to cold, complicated medical devices and waiting for the next doctor’s appointment in order to hear the baby’s heartbeat. Their picture is prettier and more relaxed – and those cute wooden nature-inspired gadgets will surely make a difference. Bellabeat gives women the chance to hear the comforting beat of their baby’s heart whenever and wherever they want and to easily track their weight, sleep, activity and stress. There is a new feature to their heartbeat monitor that allows moms to play calming music to their babies inside the womb.
All three new gadgets work with Bellabeat’s app, giving moms the ability to track their pregnancy literally in the palm of their hand. Sandro Mur, Bellabeat’s cofounder, said that their change of focus, from babies to moms, came after they realized that mothers easily adapt to the new technologies. That is why prenatal and neonatal care could become a huge market.
The main user in prenatal and neonatal care is the mother. She is also our customer, so we decided to change our focus – while the mothers focus on their baby, we will focus on them.
The Bellabeat Shell helps moms-to-be feel closer to their baby with revolutionary, non-invasive technology using high-sensitivity sensors. Mothers can feel at ease by listening to the calming sound of their baby’s heartbeat and sharing the sound with loved ones. The Bellabeat Shell also allows mothers to play calming music to their baby and track their reaction.
The Bellabeat Leaf is the latest in wearable technology giving women insight into their and their baby’s health. The Leaf is a combination of nature, technology, and fashion, and women can add the Leaf to any outfit as a bracelet, necklace or pendant. The Leaf is an activity tracker, while also helping women track their sleep and stress level and gives immediate feedback and advice if necessary.
The Bellabeat Balance is a beautiful smart scale made of wood that helps women track their weight before, during and after pregnancy. The weight information is sent directly to the Bellabeat app and saves the entire experience in one place for their convenience. This is the first-ever scale that measures the weight of mom and baby separately and can be used before, during and after pregnancy.
Bellabeat was founded in 2013 and its cofounders Sandro Mur and Urška Sršen went through the Y Combinator program. In the May of 2014 they raised $4.5M, sold 35,000 units so far and received 200,000 app downloads. It will be interesting to see how is the market going to accept the new members of Bellabeat’s family. In the meantime, you can find out more about them on the startup’s website.
